How to Backpack Without Back Pain

Posted by admin on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 in chiropractic

It’s that time of year again — summer’s winding down and school is starting back up. Before you head out to buy school supplies, don’t forget to pick up the most important back-to-school item on your list: a backpack. Though many people don’t put a lot of thought into which backpack they choose, backpacks can cause a significant amount of back, shoulder, and neck pain. Here are some tips on how to choose and wear a backpack correctly.

  • Choose the right size backpack. Backpacks should not be dragging below the hips, and they should be as close to the back as possible to distribute weight effectively.
  • Don’t wear your backpack on just one shoulder. Putting the weight of the backpack and its contents on only one shoulder will cause excess muscle tension in that area.
  • Don’t weigh yourself down. Clean out your backpack regularly to get rid of any excess papers, pens and pencils, and trash. Avoid carrying heavy laptops or books around.
