The beginning of the school year can be a stressful time as kids adjust to new schedules, classes, and homework. In the busy rush that accompanies buying back-to-school clothes and school supplies, it’s easy to forget one of the most important ways to send your child off to school right: healthy meals.

Though some districts have begun to improve their school lunch programs, most children are offered the option to eat greasy pizza, hamburgers, and french fries for lunch. The safest way to make sure your child is getting the nutrients he or she needs to power through the school day is to pack their lunch yourself. By providing your child with a filling breakfast and a nutritious lunch, they’ll be able to concentrate better, manage stress, and have fewer sick days. Here are a few nutrition tips for sending your child off to school the right way.

  • Go heavy on the fruits and vegetables: pancakes with fruit for breakfast, carrot sticks and hummus for a snack, and an apple with lunch.
  • Choose whole grains. If you’re making a sandwich, make it with whole-wheat bread.
  • Be sensitive of kids in the class who have food allergies. Almost every class is bound to have a student with a peanut allergy, so choose an almond butter and jelly sandwich instead.
