Eating Healthy on the Road

For many families, weekends in the summer are spent at the beach, visiting family, or taking road trips. Between planning, scheduling, and packing for a summer vacation, nutrition can often fall by the wayside. However, eating healthy is just as important on the road as it is at home, especially if you’re traveling with someone who has a food allergy. Here are some tips for eating healthy when vacation time rolls around.
- Plan ahead. Making a meal plan before you leave the house will prevent you from eating gas-station gourmet or drive-thru dinners. Try to book hotels that have kitchens, and assign each member of the family a meal to cook.
- Look up restaurants ahead of time. Once you know your destination, look up nearby restaurants that serve fresh, healthy foods. If you have travelers are vegetarian, gluten-free, or have food allergies, call ahead to make sure there are options for them.
- Bring healthy snacks. Bring a cooler for the car, and store healthy, ready-to-go snacks and breakfasts. Sliced fruit, baby carrots, and granola are all great options that can be eaten on the road.
