Natural Ways to Decrease Your Blood Pressure

Do you have high blood pressure? If so, you’re not alone—more than 30% of Americans suffer from hypertension. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body, eventually taking a toll on the arteries and putting individuals at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Many people turn to risky medications to deal with hypertension, but there are several others routes you can take to help regulate your blood pressure. Here are some lesser-known natural treatments that can lower your blood pressure.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep: According to a study by the British Heart Foundation, patients who didn’t sleep well were 83% more likely to develop hypertension, particularly for the elderly. In order to get deeper sleep, stop watching TV or using your computer at least an hour before bed. Also, be sure to get at least 7 hours a night.

Eat Potatoes: Potatoes have gotten a bad rap since the onset of the Atkins diet. However, a new study by Scranton University in Pennsylvania shows that eating potatoes—baked, boiled, or microwaved with no butter or oil—could be the secret to lowering your blood pressure. Just make sure to eat the skin—that’s where the nutrients are found.

Meditate: Allowing your mind to detach from the stresses of everyday life can be both relaxing and life-saving. According to the National Institute of Health, people who practice regular meditation have 50% fewer strokes. If you’re new to meditation, take a local yoga class to help you unwind.
